Add a Surround Speaker or Sub to a Sonos Home Theater

1. Introduction

You've added a Sonos soundbar to your television, but now you're considering expanding into a full-blown surround sound entertainment system. Luckily, that's easy to accomplish with Sonos products. The idea is even mentioned by the Sonos app during the setup of your Sonos soundbar.

Creating a Sonos Home Theater system requires that you add at least a pair of additional speakers. If desired, you can also add a subwoofer to provide additional low-end sound to your room.

This guide will demonstrate how to add speakers to a room to create a Sonos home theater system.

Tools You'll Need:

• Access to a computer with iTunes installed

Before You Begin:

You must have the Sonos App Installed.

Sonos models that can be used as surround speakers

• One (all generations) and One SL
• Play:1
• Play:3
• Play:5 (Gen 2)
• IKEA SYMFONISK WiFi bookshelf speaker
• IKEA SYMFONISK table lamp with WiFi speaker
• Connect:Amp or Amp powering third party speaker

With your Sonos soundbar already setup, you can expand upon your audio experience by adding surround speakers and a subwoofer.

In a surround sound setup, your soundbar would act as the center, front left and right speakers. Adding surround speakers will require that two speakers are added as rear left and right channels. When adding surround speakers, both speaker models must match. For example, adding two Sonos One speakers would work just fine. Attempting to add a Sonos One and a Sonos Play:5 would fail, as they are not the same model.

2. Add a Speaker or Sub via the Sonos App

In a room that already has a Sonos soundbar set up, you can use the Sonos app to add surround speakers and a subwoofer to create a Sonos home theater system.

1. Open the Sonos app on your mobile device.

2. Open the Menu from the top left corner.

2. Select Settings.
   

1. Select Room Settings.

2. Choose the room your Sonos soundbar is set up in.
   

1. Now, select Add Surrounds. If you're adding a subwoofer instead, select Add Sub.
