How to Disable Notifications on a Mac

Authored by: Support.com Tech Pro Team

1. Introduction

Mac computers generate notifications to keep you aware of the things that are happening on your machine in real time, as well as details about your day - appointments, weather, birthdays, even a summary of what you have planned for tomorrow. These notifications are sometimes incorrectly identified as "pop-ups," but are meant to be both helpful and informative. This guide will demonstrate how to disable these notifications if you'd rather not have them bug you while using your machine.

Are notifications bad?

macOS notifications are a harmless part of every day usage. While these notifications are sometimes mistaken for harmful "pop-ups," they are not able to hurt your machine. The Notification Center houses all of your machine's notifications (pictured below).

It is safe and normal to see Notifications from your Operating System. Reading them will often let you know before an update happens, or if there is something you can do to prevent problems in the future.

2. Disable Notifications

  1. Click on the (1) Apple in the upper left hand corner. Then click on (2) System Preferences.
