How to Factory Reset a Brother Printer
Brother produces a wide variety of printers. Read this introduction carefully to determine which steps are right for your printer. This guide offers four different categories of Brother printers: button-only, multi-button one and two, and digital control panels.
The first category is for buttons-only models. The control panel will look something like this:
Categories two and three have similar multi-button displays. However, some of the older models require extra steps. If you know what model you have, you can go straight to the appropriate category. If not, try both to see which steps works best for your device. Try categories two or three if your display looks something like this:

The fourth category is for models with touch-screen or digital displays. Use the steps in the fourth category if your display looks something like this:
Before continuing, unplug any wire cables that connect your printer to the network. The factory reset will not complete if your device is connected to the network. Not all Brother printers will have wire connections to the network.

These steps work for models:
- HL-L2300D
- HL-2320D
- If your device is connected, unplug it from the network.
- With your printer unplugged from the network, press and hold the power button to turn your printer off.
- Press and hold down Go until step 5.
- While holding Go, press the power button to turn the printer on.
- Keep Go pressed until the Toner, Drum, and Paper LEDs light up.
- Release Go and be sure all LEDs turn off.
- Press Go ten times.
- The machine will initiate the reset. After the machine restarts, the reset is complete.
These steps work for models: HL-3140CW; HL-3170CDW; HL-L2315DW; HL2340DW; HL2340DW; HL-S7000DN.
You must perform all of these steps for a full factory reset.
- If your device is connected, unplug it from the network.
- Press the arrow keys to navigate to Reset Menu.
- Press OK.
- Press the arrow keys to navigate to Network.
- Press OK.
- Press the Up arrow key to select Yes. The machine will restart automatically.
- After the printer powers on, press the arrow keys to navigate to Reset Menu. Press OK.
- Press Up and Cancel at the same time until Settings Reset appears.
- Press OK.
- After "Restart Printer?" appears, press OK. The machine will restart automatically.
- When the printer restarts, press the arrow keys to navigate to Reset Menu. Press OK.
- Press the arrow keys to navigate to Factory Reset. Press OK.
- Press the Up arrow to select Reset. Your Brother printer has now been completely reset.
The Factory Reset option found in the menu is not a true factory reset as it does not reset the network, interface, local language, setting lock, or Secure Function 2.0 settings.

- If your device is connected, unplug it from the network.
- Press the arrow keys to select Initial Setup.
- Press OK.
- Press the arrow keys to navigate to Reset and then press OK.
- Press the arrow keys to navigate to Factory Reset and then press OK.
- Press the Up arrow key select Reset.
- Press the Up arrow key again to restart the printer.

- If your device is connected, unplug it from the network.
- Press the Settings button.
- Press All Settings.
- Press Initial Setup.
- Press Reset.
- Press All Settings or Factory Reset (depends on which model you have).
- Press Yes.
- The printer will ask you to restart the printer. Press Yes again and hold for two seconds. The machine will initiate the restart.
If you do not restart the printer, the reset will not take effect.
