How to Fix a Comcast X1 DVR

1. Introduction

You're getting ready to record or even watch a show on your Xfinity DVR only to find out it doesn't work. Maybe your whole cable system doesn't work.

We're going to start fixing this issue by checking if you have any area outages. Outages in your area could affect your whole cable system, including your DVR, TV, and Internet. 

Once we've determined whether you have an outage we move on to rebooting.

Tools You'll Need:

  • A paperclip
  • iPhone charging cable
  • Access to a computer with iTunes installed
  • Any other non-consumable tools needed
  • Comment out tools section if no tools are necessary

  • You must have access to a computer with iTunes installed.
  • You must have that thing for the other thing so you can do the thing.

2. Check Outages

It's best to be certain there's no outage in your area before performing any troubleshooting steps.

  1. Open your preferred browser on your computer or mobile device.

  1. Type in https://www.xfinity.com/support/status and press Enter or Return on your keyboard.

  1. Select Sign In at the top.

  1. Select if you wish to use your Xfinity Username & Password, or Mobile phone number to sign in with, then select Continue.This guide assumes you're using your Xfinity Username and Password. Follow the instructions on your screen if you choose to use your Mobile phone number, instead.

  1. Enter your Xfinity Username and Password, then select Sign In.

  1. Look on the map for any outages covering your home.

4. Reboot Using Help Menu

If you have access to it, the help menu is an easy way to reboot your DVR Box.

  1. Press the help menu. Look for the "A" button in the triangle.

  2. Under Troubleshooting, select Restart.

5. Test

Try bringing up a few channels, and use the other features of your Comcast DVR.

7. Power Button Reboot

If you can't reach the Help Menu or the Help Menu doesn't work, you can use the button the front of the DVR.

  1. Push and hold the Power Button on the front of your cable box for 10 seconds.

  2. The cable box will restart. Allow a few minutes for the cable box to finish starting back up.

8. Power Cable Reboot

If neither the Help Menu nor the Power Button works, you should just remove the power plug from the box.

  1. Unplug your cable box.

  1. Wait 10 seconds.
  2. Plug your cable box back in.
  3. Push the Power Button on your remote to turn your cable box back on.
