How to Fix PlayStation 3 Not Starting After Update

1. Introduction

Like any technology, sometimes your PlayStation 3 may fail to work properly. In this guide, we'll be looking at a rare problem where your PlayStation 3 doesn't start after updating. Unfortunately this issue means your operating system has corrupted and you'll need to restore it.

Tools You'll Need:

  • Your PS3
  • Access to the internet

  • Any other consumable supplies
  • Comment out supplies section if no supplies are necessary

2. Boot the PS3 into Safe Mode

Safe Mode allows you to start the system with the most basic functions only. The Safe Mode menu options may help you correct issues and allow your PlayStation to start normally.

  1. Connect the controller with the USB cable from the PlayStation.

  1. Press and hold the power button on the console for 10 seconds or until it has shut down. The power indicator will blink for a few moments before turning off. The power indicator should be solid red.

  1. Release the power button.
  2. Press and hold the power button again until you hear two short beeps.
  3. Press the PS button on the controller to start your PlayStation in Safe Mode.

3. Restore PS3 System

Restore PS3 System reverts your console back to its default settings and deletes the saved data and all users from the system.

Choosing to initialize your PS3 will clear the hard drive of data, including downloaded games, saved game data, and anything else you’ve added to the console since buying it. However, if you are a member of PlayStation Plus your game saves and trophies will not be touched as they are saved to the PlayStation Network. Restoring your PS3 only affects the physical hard drive.

  1. When you are in Safe Mode, scroll down and select Restore PS3 System.

If after you restore your PS3 System, it still does not boot:
