Types of issues this guide will tackle:

  • No sound output.
  • Sound is too quiet, loud, or is unbalanced.

2. Check your HDMI cables or try a different one

  1. Check the HDMI cable ends and device ports and remove any foreign objects.
  2. Check for cable damage. If it is damaged then it should be replaced.
  3. Securely and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable between your devices.
  4. Try plugging the HDMI cable ends into a different port on each device if possible.
  5. Try using a different high-speed HDMI cable. Some cables are higher quality than others, a low-quality cable may impact your sound and video signal.

3. Change Audio Output on Xbox One

To ensure best audio performance use the correct audio settings for your home theater on the Xbox One.

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select All Settings.

  1. Select Audio output.
  2. Select either HDMI audio or Optical audio, based on how your device is connected. Most setups are using HDMI audio.
  3. Select the correct audio format for your home theater, either 5.1 uncompressed or 7.1 uncompressed.
    If not sure select Stereo uncompressed.

Ensure the sound balance bar is not pushed completely to one side:

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select All Settings.

  2. Select Sound mixer.
  3. Adjust the sound balance between main and snapped games and apps. This only works when an app is snapped. Volume will be normal when only one app is on the screen.

6. Adjust Chat Mixer Settings on Xbox One

If your active game or app becomes quiet or inaudible when you're using voice chat, your chat mixer may require adjustment.

To adjust the chat mixer settings:

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select All Settings.

  1. Select Volume.
  2. Select Chat mixer.
  3. Select one of the available options:
  4. Mute all other sounds - Mutes all sounds while chatting over Kinect.
  5. Reduce the volume of other sounds by 80%
  6. Reduce the volume of other sounds by 50%
  7. Do nothing
