How to Fix Sound Recording Issues on Windows 10

1. Introduction

Are you a streamer with a malfunctioning mic?

Are your audio levels too low or too high?

Do you just need to record something and it isn't working right?

This guide will walk you through correcting any issues with your audio recordings on Windows 10.

2. Run the Recording Audio Troubleshooter

  1. Search Troubleshoot.

3. Restart Your PC

Before your restart or shut down your PC, make sure to save all necessary work to prevent data loss.

  • Using the Mouse
  • Select the Start menu.

  • By default it is in the lower left corner of your screen.
  • Select Power, then select Restart.

  • Using the Keyboard
  • Press the Windows and X keys at the same time. This minimizes any open windows you may have.

  • Press the Alt and F4 keys at the same time. This tells Windows to close the desktop.

4. Set Up Microphone

  1. Right-click the Speaker icon.

  1. Select the Start Menu.

  1. You’ll be prompted to read a sentence for the recognition software to learn your voice.

  1. Once done, your mic will be set up.

5. Adjust Microphone Levels

  1. Right-click the Speaker icon.

  1. Under Input, select Device Properties.

  1. Adjust the levels on the microphone to make sure they're working properly.

6. Update Audio Drivers

  1. Search Device Manager.

  1. Select the small arrow next to Sound, video and game controllers to expand this section, and see the devices in them.

  1. Double click one of the devices under one of these headings to show its properties. Select Driver.

  1. Select Search automatically for updated driver software.

  1. Windows will automatically locate any updated drivers available.

  1. If any updated drivers are available, you'll be offered the chance to install them. Once installed, or if none are available, close the driver updater for this device.
