How to Fix Update Issues on an Amazon Fire TV

The software running on the TV receives updates automatically, and should download and install to your device when it's connected to the Internet. Unfortunately, this doesn't always happen as seamlessly as it should. This guide will help you combat an unruly Fire TV that runs into any issues performing updates.

Unfortunately, this doesn't always happen as seamlessly as it should. This guide will help you combat an unruly Fire TV that runs into any issues performing updates.
Restarting your Fire TV depends on the type of device you have:
For a Fire TV Set-Top Box or Stick you can do the following:
- Press and hold the Select and Play/Pause buttons at the same time for about five seconds.
- Or, From the main screen of your Fire TV, go to Settings.
- Then go to Device.
- And choose Restart. Confirm your decision by selecting Restart.
- Alternatively, you can unplug the power cord from the device, wait 10 seconds and then plug it back in.
For a Fire TV Edition Smart TV you can do the following:
- Press the Power button on the remote, wait for 10 seconds and then press it again.
- Alternatively, you can unplug the power cord from the outlet, wait 10 seconds and then plug it back in.
To manually check for a software update on your Amazon Fire TV:
- Select Settings.
- Select Device.
- Select About.
- Select System Update.
- If an update is available, it will automatically start downloading. Once the download is complete, select Install Update to complete installation.
- Remove the power cable from both your modem and router.
- Verify all lights are off on the modem and router.
- After 30 seconds, plug in your modem and then your router.
- It may take a few minutes for the internet to reconnect.
Updates can only download and install automatically when your device has an active internet connection.
From the main screen:
- Select Settings
- Select Network
- Your preferred Wi-Fi network should already be selected and shown with a check mark.
- If you are not connected to any networks, select your preferred network from the list now.
- Enter your Wi-Fi network password, if needed.
- You'll see a confirmation message on-screen when your device is successfully connected to your selected network.
