How to Fix Video Issues on a PlayStation 3

1. Introduction

This guide will help resolve video issues with your PlayStation 3 video game console.

2. Check your HDMI cables or try a different one

  1. Check the HDMI cable ends and device ports and remove any foreign objects.
  2. Check for cable damage. If it is damaged then it should be replaced.
  3. Securely and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable between your devices.
  4. Try plugging the HDMI cable ends into a different port on each device if possible.
  5. Try using a different high-speed HDMI cable. Some cables are higher quality than others, a low-quality cable may impact your sound and video signal.

3. Reboot

  1. Hold down the Power Button located on the front of the PlayStation 3 system for 10 seconds.
  2. The power indicator will turn red.
  3. Restart the console by pressing the Power Button again.

4. Check TV input

Checking the TV inputs may also help to fix the issue.

  1. Confirm that both your TV and the device are turned on.
  2. Check that your TV is set to the correct input signal (HDMI).
  3. Check that the HDMI cable connection to your device is secure.
  4. Check that the HDMI cable connection to your TV is secure.
  5. Check that the HDMI cable is connected to the "out to TV" port on the device.
  6. Try plugging the HDMI cable into a different HDMI port on your TV.
  7. Try using a different HDMI cable to connect your device to your TV.
  8. If possible:
  9. Check if TV is working properly with a different input device.
  10. Check if the device is working properly with a different TV.

6. Reset Video Output Settings

  1. Make sure your TV or monitor is on and is set to the proper input for your PS3.
  2. While the PS3 is in standby mode, press and hold the console’s power button down located on its front panel until you hear the second beep.

  1. PS3 Slim models are always in standby mode when plugged in, while the fat models must have the power switch at the back turned on. While pressing and holding the power button down, you will hear a beep when the console powers on, and as you continue to hold the power button, you will hear another beep after 4-5 seconds.
  2. Wait for your TV or monitor screen to flicker once or twice, your system to boot up, and your screen to display a confirmation it has detected your video settings. Turn on your PS3 controller and select Yes to continue.

  1. Select Yes to confirm the detected settings displayed on-screen, and you should be able to resume playing your console normally.

  1. If your system does not boot up and display the confirmation of your video settings, turn the console off, then turn it back on using the normal procedure.
  2. Attempt to repeat these steps if your console is still unable to display video to your TV or monitor.
