How to Install the Teamviewer App

1. Introduction

TeamViewer is a simple way to access your computer remotely, help friends or family, as well as transfer files to your remote computer. You can do this from any computer or mobile device with the TeamViewer software installed.

Tools You'll Need:

  • A paperclip
  • iPhone charging cable
  • Access to a computer with iTunes installed
  • Any other non-consumable tools needed
  • Comment out tools section if no tools are necessary

2. Choose Your Operating System

To continue, we need to know what Operating System your computer or mobile device has.

For Computers

There are 2 main Operating Systems for personal computers currently available, Windows and macOS.

Windows

Windows runs on computers produced by multiple companies, such as Lenovo, Asus, Dell, Toshiba, Hewlett Packard, Acer, and Sony.

Microsoft Windows.

Apple is the only company that makes macOS computers.

For Mobile Devices

There are 2 main Operating Systems for smartphones currently available, Android and iOS.

Android

Android smartphones are produced by multiple companies, such as Samsung, LG, Motorola, Sony, Nokia, Lenovo, and HTC.

3. Setup Remote Access (Windows)

  1. Open your preferred browser, type teamviewer.com into the address bar, and press Enter.

  1. On the TeamViewer homepage, select Download For Free.

  1. Once the file has downloaded, open it.

  1. You'll be asked how you want TeamViewer to work on your system. You want to be able to connect to your personal computer remotely. Select Installation to access this computer remotely (unattended) and indicate you're using TeamViewer for Personal / Non-commercial use, then select Accept - finish.

  1. Windows will ask for permission to install TeamViewer, select Yes.

  1. The Unattended access wizard will open. Select Next.

  1. Enter a name for your computer. Next, enter a Password to remotely connect to your computer. Finally, select Next.

  1. It is very important that this password is as complex as possible, but still easy for you to remember. This password is used to grant remote access to your computer, do not share it with anyone you do not want to use your computer.
  2. The Wizard will complete, and show you an ID. Write down this ID number; you will need it to connect to your computer in the future. Select Finish.

  1. It is important to note this ID. While easy to look up later, it's important to have this information when you want to connect.

Changing TeamViewer Settings

TeamViewer is setup to run when your computer starts up. If you wish to view your ID, change passwords, or any other settings, you can access the program from the TeamViewer icon in your System Tray.

You may need to expand the System Tray to show the TeamViewer icon.

4. Install to at Least Two Locations

Remote Access software requires that you have it installed in at least two locations. For example, your home computer and your work computer, or your home computer and a mobile phone. One acts as the client (where you are accessing from), and the other acts as a server (where you are connecting to).

Make sure your remote computer is turned on; you cannot remotely connect to a computer that is turned off.

5. Setup Remote Access (macOS)

  1. Open your browser, type teamviewer.com into the address bar at top, and press Return.

  1. On the TeamViewer page, select Download For Free.

  1. Once the download completes, open the TeamViewer.dmg file.

  1. Double click the Install TeamViewer icon.

  1. An Introduction page will be displayed. Select Continue.

  1. The Software License Agreement is displayed. Carefully read this information, and when you're ready to continue, select Continue.

  1. If you agree with the terms of the software license agreement, select Agree to continue.

  1. You'll be asked where you want to install TeamViewer, the default location on your primary hard disk will be fine. Select Install.

  1. You'll be asked to grant permission to allow TeamViewer to install. Enter your Mac's password, and select Install Software.

  1. With TeamViewer installed, it will open to walk you through setting up remote access. Select Continue.

  1. Enter a password to access your machine twice, then select Continue.

  1. Installation is complete, select Close.

  1. With installation successful, we don't need the installer anymore. Select Move to Trash.

  1. In order to use control from your remote devices, TeamViewer needs certain permissions granted. Select Configure permissions.

  1. Your Mac will ask if it's okay to open Accessibility for you, select Open System Preferences.

  1. Security & Privacy Preferences will open, with the Privacy tab, and Accessibility option selected. Select the lock in the bottom-left corner to unlock Preferences.

  1. Enter your Mac's password, and select Unlock.

  1. Place a checkmark next to TeamViewer and TeamViewer_Desktop to allow TeamViewer to control your computer when you're remotely connected.

  1. Finally, we need to get your TeamViewer ID, so you'll be able to connect remotely. Select the TeamViewer icon on the top-right of your menu bar, and select Show TeamViewer.

  1. In TeamViewer, make note of Your ID. You will need this information to remotely connect to your computer in the future.

6. Install Mobile Client (Android)

  1. Open the Play Store, then select the Search Bar at the top.

7. Initial Setup (Android)

  1. Open TeamViewer.

8. Install Mobile Client (iOS)

  1. Open the App Store and select Search in the bottom right corner.
