Your PlayStation 3 offers two types of profiles: user profiles or PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts. Having a user profile will enable the console to store your saved game data, messages, and bookmarks as well as remember your preferences. User profiles are for your local data. A PSN account gives you access to the PlayStation Store, Chat, or other various online services.
