How to Play Music on a PlayStation 4

1. Introduction

You can play your music or stream audio from online services through Apps that can be downloaded from the PlayStation Store.

2. USB Music Player

Your PlayStation 4 can play music files from a USB storage device. You can listen to music while playing games or using other applications.

What you need before you start:

  • Computer with USB port
  • USB storage device
  • Supported file formats:
  • MP3
  • AAC

To listen to music from a USB storage device

  1. Use your computer to create a folder called "Music" on the USB storage device.
  2. Copy your music files to the new "Music" folder.
  3. Connect the USB storage device to your PlayStation 4.
    (USB Music Player should appear on the content area.)
  4. Select USB Music Player.

  1. Select the music you want to play.
  2. To play all music in the folder:
  3. Highlight the folder.
  4. Press the Options button.
  5. Then select Play.

You can select any game and the music will continue to play in the background.

3. In-game Music Controls

How to control your music while playing games on your PlayStation 4 console

  1. Long-press the PS button to bring up the quick menu.

  2. Select Media Player or Spotify on the quick menu.
  3. Navigate using the directional buttons, and press X to select features and play music.
  4. Skip songs with L1 (backwards) and R1 (forwards).
  5. Control volume up and down using the directional buttons.
  6. If the game allows, you can disable in-game music for the best sound experience.

4. Media Player

Use the Media Player application to enjoy videos, photos and music from a USB storage device. You can also play music in the background when playing games or using other apps.

What you need before you start:

  • PlayStation 4 must be connected to the Internet
  • Music files on a USB storage device or network media server.
  • Supported file formats:
  • FLAC
  • MP4
  • MP3
  • AAC
  • MKV
  • AVI
  • JPEG
  • BMP
  • PNG

To play music using the Media Player:

  1. Search for Media Player from the PlayStation Store on your PS4.
  2. Select Download.

5. Spotify

Playstation Music uses Spotify to stream your music while you game on your PlayStation 4.

What you need before you start:

  • PlayStation 4 needs to be connected to the Internet

Stream music using Spotify

  1. Search for "Spotify" under PlayStationâ„¢Music on the PlayStation Store.
  2. Select Download.
  3. Select Spotify from the content area, then choose Start.

  1. Log in to Spotify:

  1. There are 2 methods available for logging into Spotify. You can use your username and password, or using Spotify Connect to login via the Spotify app on your phone or tablet.
  2. Log in to Spotify with your username and password.
  3. Select Log In.
  4. Select Other Ways To Log In.
  5. Select Username & Password.
  6. Enter your username and password, and select Log In.
  7. Select Link Accounts.

  1. Log in to Spotify using Spotify Connect.
  2. Open Spotify on your phone or tablet.
  3. Tap the bar at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Tap the Connect icon.
  5. Choose your PlayStation from the list.
