How to Set Up a Sonos Playbar Soundbar

1. Introduction

The Sonos Playbar is a soundbar that dramatically improves the sound coming from your TV and seamlessly integrates with the Sonos sound system. This guide will show you how to set it up with the Sonos app.

Before You Begin:

Install the Sonos app
You need to have the Sonos app installed on your phone or tablet to set up the Playbar.

2. Prepare the Playbar for Setup

Prior to setting up the Playbar with the Sonos Controller app, you have to find a proper place for it and make all the required connections:

  1. Place the Playbar in an open area, centered with your television. The connector panel should be facing toward your television or the wall.

  1. A few things to consider when placing the Playbar:
  2. For the best listening experience, place it at the same level your ears will be at while watching TV.
  3. Do not place it vertically on its side.
  4. Do not place it in a cabinet or on a walled shelf.
  5. Both of its ends should be at least 1 foot from a wall or other obstruction.
  6. Connect one end of the optical cable to the rear of your television, and the other end to the rear of the Playbar.

  1. Connect one end of the power cable to the rear of the Playbar, and the other end to an electrical outlet.

  1. The Playbar will begin powering up.

3. Set Up the Playbar with the Sonos Controller app

With the Playbar properly positioned and wired, you can initiate the setup. During this process you will add the Playbar to the Sonos app, connect it to your home's WiFi, pair it with your TV's remote and turn off the TV's speakers:

  1. Open the Sonos app on your phone or tablet.

  1. Select Set up a new Sonos system.

  1. Select Create account if you don't have a Sonos account yet or Sign in if you already do.

  1. Select Continue to proceed with the setup process.

  1. Select Standard setup for your Playbar to continue.

  1. Select Next to proceed with Standard setup.

  1. Your Playbar should already be powered on. Ensure that it is, and select Next to proceed.

  1. You should eventually see a green flashing light on your Playbar. Once you do, select Continue to proceed.

  1. The Sonos Controller app will begin searching for your Playbar.

  1. The Sonos Controller app should have determined you are attempting to setup a Playbar. Ensure that Playbar is the type of player currently selected from the drop-down menu, then select Set up this player.

  1. Press the Play/Pause & Volume Up buttons at the same time as instructed on the screen. Select Next to continue.

  1. After this, you will see a flashing orange light on your Playbar. Once you see this, select I see an orange light to proceed.

  1. The Sonos Controller app will then begin configuring your Playbar.

  1. The Playbar is now ready to begin its network setup process. Select Next for instructions on how to proceed.

  1. You will be asked to connect your mobile device to a temporary network called SONOS in order to proceed with the setup process.

  1. Connect to the SONOS network.
Android
  1. On an Android Phone or Tablet
  2. Open Settings.

  1. On an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch

  1. Return to the Sonos app.

  1. The Playbar is now connected to your home network. Select Next to continue.

  1. Select the room your Playbar is in, then select Next.

  1. Make sure your TV is turned off. Select Next.

  1. You'll be asked if you have purchased a subwoofer and want to set it up. Select Not Now.

  1. You'll be asked if you have purchased surround sound speakers and want to set them up. Select Not Now.

  1. We have already connected the optical cable. Select Next.

  1. Turn your TV on, then select Next.

  1. When your soundbar hears your TV through the cable, it will let you know. Select Next.

  1. The app will now attempt to instruct you on turning your TV speakers off. Once you believe you have successfully disabled your speakers, return to the app and select Next.

  2. The exact steps for disabling the speakers on your TV will vary depending on the manufacturer and model you have. Please consult your TV's documentation for more details.
  3. Push the Settings button on your TV's remote.

  1. Select Successfully Disabled if you were able to successfully disable your TV's speakers to continue the setup process. Select Not Disabled for further instructions.

  1. Our next step will be setting up the volume controls from your TV's remote. Select Next.

  1. Point your TV's remote at your Playbar. Push the Volume Up button on your remote.

  1. Your Sonos app will let you know when it sees the volume up command, and assign it to itself. Select Next.

  1. Next, the app will have you test the remote to ensure it is configured properly. Follow the on-screen instructions and select an appropriate option from the list.
