With the IKEA Tradfri Gateway you can connect your IKEA smart lighting to your home network and control it all with the app on your phone or tablet or by speaking to Alexa, Siri or Google Assistant.
This guide will show you how to set up your IKEA Tradfri smart lighting system by connecting your phone or tablet to the gateway and linking the gateway with the steering devices and smart lighting. Steering devices are what IKEA calls the devices you use to control the Tradfri smart lighting, such as the remote control, motion sensor or wireless dimmer. To add smart lighting to the Tradfri system, you have to link the steering devices to the gateway first, then link the steering devices to your smart lighting.

Before You Begin:
Your must have the IKEA Home Smart app already installed
Launch the IKEA Home Smart app on your phone or tablet.
Check the box to agree with the Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy, then tap Let's Get Started.
You will be asked to plug in your gateway. We'll show you how.
3. Plug in the Gateway
Turn the gateway cover counter clockwise to the unlocked position then lift it.
Plug the provided Ethernet and power (Micro USB) cables into the gateway.
Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into your router.
Plug the other end of the power cable into a wall outlet and wait for all three indicator lights on the gateway to turn on.
Wind the cables around the body of the gateway and fasten them with the clip on the right edge.
Replace the gateway cover with the cables coming out through the hole then turn it clockwise into the locked position.
4. Connect Phone or Tablet to Gateway
Return to the app and tap Next.
Tap Scan to continue.
Locate the Security Code on the bottom of your gateway and point your mobile device's camera towards it. Ensure it's placed within the square marked on the screen.
If you're unable to scan the Security Code, tap Type in the code instead so you can enter it manually.
You should get a confirmation once your mobile device is connected to the gateway. Tap Next to continue.
5. Link Steering Device with Gateway
Next, you'll have to link your devices to the Tradfri gateway. You must link the steering devices to the gateway before you link them to any lights. Below are the types of steering devices that you can link to the gateway:
You can link up to 50 devices to a Tradfri gateway. This includes steering devices and lights. Also, you can link up to 10 lights or control outlets to a Tradfri steering device.
Remote Control
Motion Sensor
Wireless Dimmer (Old)
This steering device appears to have been discontinued and replaced by the Wireless On/Off Switch.
Wireless Dimmer (New)
You may see this steering device also called a Wireless On/Off Switch on some packaging, in some documentation or in the IKEA Home Smart app, prior to being renamed a Wireless Dimmer.
Select the type of steering device you are linking with the gateway:
Remote Control
On the Phone or Tablet
Choose the Remote Control as the device to be linked with the Tradfri gateway.
The app will show you a few screens with instructions on what to do. Feel free to follow along within the app and tap Next on each screen when you are ready to proceed.
With the Remote Control
Use a screwdriver or a similar tool to remove the battery cover of the remote control.
Insert the provided battery with the positive side outward.
Press and release the button next to the battery 4 times within 5 seconds.
Wait for at least 10 seconds since you released the button for the remote control to be reset.
Place the remote control within an inch of the gateway then press and hold the Link button (1) next to the battery for at least 10 seconds until the topmost indicator light (2) on the gateway starts flashing quickly then turns solid.
On the Phone or Tablet
You should get a confirmation message on the mobile device that the remote control was found. Tap OK to continue.
Motion Sensor
On the Phone or Tablet
Choose the Motion Sensor as the device to be linked with the Tradfri gateway.
The app will show you a few screens with instructions on what to do. Feel free to follow along within the app and tap Next on each screen when you are ready to proceed.
With the Motion Sensor
Use a screwdriver or a similar tool to remove the battery cover of the motion sensor.
Insert the provided batteries with their positive side outward.
Replace the battery cover.
Use the screwdriver to adjust the Day / Night setting.
Set it to the crescent moon if you want detected motion to turn the light on during nighttime only.
Set it to the sun with rays if you want detected motion to turn the light on during daytime and nighttime.
Similarly, adjust the Time setting. Set the light to be turned off 1, 5 or 10 minutes after last motion was detected.
Press and release the Link button 4 times within 5 seconds.
Wait for at least 10 seconds since you released the button for the motion sensor to be reset.
Place the motion sensor within an inch of the gateway then press and hold the Link button (1) on the back for at least 10 seconds until the topmost indicator light (2) on the gateway starts flashing quickly then turns solid.
On the Phone or Tablet
You should get a confirmation message on the mobile device that the motion sensor was found. Tap OK to continue.
Wireless Dimmer (Old)
On the Phone or Tablet
Choose the Wireless Dimmer as the device to be linked with the Tradfri gateway.
The app will show you a few screens with instructions on what to do. Feel free to follow along within the app and tap Next on each screen when you are ready to proceed.
With the Wireless Dimmer
Press the wireless dimmer against the palm of your hand and turn the cover counter clockwise then lift it to remove it.
Use a screwdriver or a similar tool to detach the dimmer body from the base.
Flip the dimmer body on the other side and insert the provided battery with the positive side outward.
Re-attach the dimmer body into the base then press and release the Link button 4 times within 5 seconds.
Wait for at least 10 seconds since you released the button for the wireless dimmer to be reset.
Place the wireless dimmer within an inch of the gateway then press and hold the Link button (1) for at least 10 seconds until the topmost indicator light (2) on the gateway starts flashing quickly then turns solid.
On the Phone or Tablet
You should get a confirmation message on the mobile device that the wireless dimmer was found. Tap OK to continue.
Wireless Dimmer (New)
On the Phone or Tablet
Choose the Wireless On/Off Switch as the device to be linked with the Tradfri gateway.
The app will show you a few screens with instructions on what to do. Feel free to follow along within the app and tap Next on each screen when you are ready to proceed.
With the Wireless Dimmer
Use a Philips screwdriver to remove the screw from the back of the wireless dimmer.
Remove the battery cover.
Insert the provided battery with the positive side outward.
Press and release the Link button next to the battery 4 times within 5 seconds.
Wait for at least 10 seconds since you released the button for the wireless dimmer to be reset.
Place the wireless dimmer within an inch of the gateway then press and hold the Link button (1) for at least 10 seconds until the outermost indicator light (2) on the gateway starts flashing quickly then turns solid.
On the Phone or Tablet
You should get a confirmation message on the mobile device that the wireless dimmer was found. Tap OK to continue.
6. Link Light Bulb with Steering Device
You can link a variety of IKEA smart lighting devices to the Tradfri steering devices. This guide only focuses on how to link bulbs.
Choose Bulb as the type of lighting device to add to the system.
Choose the steering device you want to link the bulb with and tap Next.
Install the light bulb and power it on.
Make sure you power off or unscrew other smart lights in the vicinity to avoid unlinking them from the steering device.
Link the light bulb with the steering device.
Remote Control
Place the remote control within an inch of the bulb then press and hold the Link button next to the battery for at least 10 seconds until the bulb stops pulsing.
Motion Sensor
Place the motion sensor within an inch of the bulb then press and hold the Link button on the back for at least 10 seconds until the bulb stops pulsing.
Wireless Dimmer (Old)
Place the wireless dimmer within an inch of the bulb then press and hold the Link button on the front for at least 10 seconds until the bulb stops pulsing.
Wireless Dimmer (New)
Place the wireless dimmer within an inch of the bulb then press and hold the Link button next to the battery for at least 10 seconds until the bulb stops pulsing.
You should get a confirmation message on the mobile device that the bulb was found. Tap OK to continue.
7. Add More Devices or Finish the Setup
On the Phone or Tablet
You'll be shown a screen with the devices you've added so far to the system. To link more lights or steering devices, tap Add another device.
Choose the type of device you want to add and repeat the process as before.
If you want to link any other lights to a different steering device, you must link the steering device to the gateway first, and only then link the lights to the steering device.
Tap Done when you're finished.
The app will show you the latest features of the IKEA Tradfri system. You can slide left through the screens if your want to learn more or tap Continue to finish.
With the Steering Device
Make sure you replace the cover on your steering device.
Remote Control
Snap the battery cover back into place.
Wireless Dimmer (Old)
Replace the cover and turn it clockwise to secure it.
